Understanding Crohn’s Disease in Children: Treatment Options, Medication Insights & the Emotional Journey
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect any part of the GI tract. When it shows up in children, it impacts far more than digestion—it affects growth, nutrition, school performance, self-esteem, and family life.
As a clinical pharmacist who recently completed a Medication Utilization Evaluation (MUE) at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) on bioequivalent therapies for pediatric Crohn’s disease, I’ve seen how complex this condition can be—and how much hope today’s treatments offer.
What Is Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the digestive tract. Children may experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, slowed growth, fevers, joint pain, or skin symptoms. Early, optimized treatment is essential to protect growth and long-term gut health.
Treatment Options
Nutrition Therapy
Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) and individualized nutrition plans can calm inflammation and support growth.
Conventional Medications
Steroids (for flares), immunomodulators, and antibiotics may be used depending on disease severity.
Biologic Therapies & Biosimilars
Biologics—including anti-TNF agents (infliximab, adalimumab), anti-integrins, and IL inhibitors—are often the most effective options for achieving deep remission.
MUE Insight:
During my evaluation at HUMC, biosimilars were found to be:
Just as effective as brand-name biologics
Safe, with no increased adverse effects
More accessible, lowering financial burden
Well-accepted with proper patient education and support
Emerging Therapies
New biologics and small-molecule medications continue to expand options for children with difficult-to-control disease.
The Emotional Impact
Crohn’s affects the entire family—not just the child. There are fears about flares, new medications, growth, school absences, and the unpredictable nature of the disease. Kids may struggle with body image or feel “different” from their peers.
And yet, there is remarkable resilience—children pushing forward, parents advocating powerfully, and care teams supporting them every step of the way.

Services we offer:
Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
Full review of all medications and supplements
Identification of interactions or duplications
Education on biologics and biosimilars
Guidance on infusion vs injection choices
Support during transitions (e.g., switching to a biosimilar)
Treatment Optimization & Safety Check-Ins
Lab monitoring guidance
Tracking symptom patterns
Reviewing dosing schedules
Helping families understand what’s “normal” vs “concerning”
Supplement Consultation
Safe use of supplements with Crohn’s medications
Recommendations for gut-supportive or nutrient-supportive options
Guidance on avoiding products that may worsen inflammation
Chronic Condition Education
Teaching families the “why” behind each therapy
